Vanilla Tincture

Living abroad? In need of real vanilla extract which is basically a tincture. Continue reading to learn how to make your own vanilla tincture for all your baking needs.

4-5 vanilla beans

350 ml bottle of vodka

Directions: Slit the beans on one side, open flat and with the spoon or back of a knife scrape out the seeds. Place into the bottle of liquor along with the vanilla bean pods. Shake everyday for 4 days. Keep in a cool dark place. It’s possible to use after the four days, but it gets better with time. Shake the bottle every once in awhile. You can keep it going by adding more liquor and beans over time.

Tips:

  • When purchasing vanilla beans, the fresher the better. You can use dried ones, but the tincture is much more potent when fresh. Fresh ones bend easier then dried.
  • Vodka, rum, or brandy are ideal.
